Cat Carriers
Why all cat owners need a cat carrier
If you own a cat a cat carrier is an essential piece of cat equipment that you will need. Even if you never intend to take your cat with you when you go on a trip you will still need some type of cat carrier for the occasional visits to the vets. Even on very short journeys you should never allow you cat to travel either uncaged or in a passengers arms. It is just to easy for your cat to become frightened and if given the opportunity may attempt to run away.
Types of cat carriers
There are 3 basic types of carrier and which you on eyou select will depend on the type of journeys you are likely to take with your cat.
- Solid cat carrier. These can be made of metal, plastic or wicker. They are the best type of cat carrier but also the most expensive. If you intend to take your cat by rail or air then the company may insist that your cat travels in a solid and lockable cat carrier. If you are planning to travel by train or airplane it is a good idea to check what rules they have about cat carriers.
- Soft Cat carriers. These are convenient as they can be folded up when not being used and are lightweight . They do not give the amount of protection for the cat but they are fine for short journeys.
- Cardboard cat carriers. These are a cheaper option and again may be fine for short journey such as a trip to the vets. However, although relatively cheap to buy cardboard cat carriers are not very durable.
Points to consider when buying cat carriers
- As already mentioned the first consideration is the purpose that you want the cat carrier for. Although a cardboard carrier may be fine if you rarely carry the cat out of the house and then only on short journey but if you intend longer trips it is not the best option.
- Size of the cat carrier. There are large cats and there are small cats. Cat carriers need to be large enough for the cat to be able to stand and turn around. However, it should not be too large as the cat may not be able to brace itself in the case of any sudden movement.
- The weight of the carrier. The bigger a carrier tends to be the heavier it will be. Remember you may have to carry the cat carrier long distance through airports or bus terminals along with your other entire luggage. Cat carriers made of plastic or wicker are lighter than metal ones and this may be a consideration for the cat owner.
Most pet shops have a good range of cat carriers and .there are also many websites on the Internet that offer cat carriers at reasonable prices.
